Video: Ferrari 488 Pista flat-out at the Nürburgring

The hills are alive with the sound of Ferrari

WHEN IT comes to sports car fans, nothing gets them quite as excited as a new Ferrari. And when it comes to new Ferraris, nothing is more exciting than a special series car. These are the high performance machines with eye-watering price tags and exotic components, engineered to give playboy drivers the closest thrill to piloting a racing car.

So it is little wonder that the Tifosi, Ferrari’s super-fans, are getting more than a little animated over video footage of the new 488 Pista, the £215,000, go-even-faster version of one of the greatest cars yet made by Italy’s favourite car maker.

As its name suggests, this is a car built to perform flying laps of the world’s most challenging race tracks. So it’s hardly surprising that the sports car has been caught on camera flying at speed around the Nürburgring race circuit, in Germany — and its highly tuned V8 engine sounds good enough to turn petrolheads weak at the knees.

Launched at the Geneva motor show, in March, the reason for all the noise is that the company’s engineers have been given free reign to do as they please with the 3.9-litre, twin-turbo motor. It uses new exhaust manifolds, a lightweight crankshaft and flywheel, titanium con rods and carbon-fibre intake plenums – which all sounds jolly nice but it’s the power of the V8 that is the most jaw-dropping factoid. Ferrari says it boasts 711bhp at 8,000rpm.

At the launch of the 488 Pista, the company stressed that the engine sound is “unique and unmistakably Ferrari.” Judging by this video footage, it wasn’t exaggerating.

So take a moment to turn up the volume and enjoy the sound of the new Pista.
